The StoryGraph

The StoryGraph

The StoryGraph is a Goodreads alternative that’s put a bigger focus on statistics and recommendations than Goodreads has. I created an account a couple of years ago but never did anything with it, in part because I wasn’t sure how I’d use it in tandem with Goodreads without driving myself batty trying to keep them both up to date. Not that I write such captivating reviews, but I have a lot of friends and family on Goodreads and I didn’t (and still don’t) want to leave the platform entirely.

But in December I decided to give it a go. I exported everything from Goodreads, and imported it into The StoryGraph. What I did not know at the time, but should have realized, was that December is one of the busiest times of year for new accounts and imports into The StoryGraph, and it took several days before all my data made it in. Unfortunately it wasn’t a clean import, but I didn’t want to delete it all and start over. I made sure the last few years were correct, and from time to time I come across other things that need to be fixed. (Common fixes for me are re-reads not showing up, unfinished books being missing, and the audiobook being selected instead of the ebook. But note that some of these are issues with the Goodreads data.)

It took me a little while to adjust to the navigation, and at first it felt like things were kind of hidden. But once I got used to I liked it a lot, and at this point I’m using it multiple times a day. Overall the design is more inviting and less cluttered than Goodreads and there’s a lot of great features. Goodreads has some of them, but in many cases I think The StoryGraph does them better.

I really enjoy how easy it is to track your reading, and the many ways you can track it. The Stats page is easily accessible and has all kinds of interesting charts and graphs. The homepage you see when you log in also does a great job of featuring books from your To-Read Pile by loading a handful of covers at random whenever you hit the page.

But my favorite feature is Up Next, which is part of the To-Read Pile. This is a feature where you can track the books you’re reading next, and the order you’re planning to read them. I really like this as I can keep the books for my book clubs top of mind, and track my holds as they come in. However I did recently learn that you can only have 5 books in your Up Next pile, which is a little limiting when six holds and a pre-order arrive in less than a week.

I think the biggest thing that differentiates The Storygraph from Goodreads is the recommendations – they do feel much more tailored. Other neat features include Buddy Reads (a read-along with a friend), a really nice page to track Reading Challenges (like reading all the Hugo finalists), and more.

These days I’m using The StoryGraph on a daily basis, and updating my Goodreads once a week. If you want to see what I’m reading at the moment, and quickly look at my reviews of what I’ve read recently, you can see all that (and more) on my profile page. And if you’ve ever felt frustrated by Amazon’s lack of investment in Goodreads, give switching a think.

Weekly Delights: Week of May 27, 2024

My sister-in-law was in town for a short visit. It was wonderful to see her in person and get to catch up outside of the family zooms, which tend to be a little chaotic. We had great weather for her visit, and spent part of Monday at the Arboretum. The bonsai exhibit was open, so we took that in and wandered around by the capitol columns.

Technically this should have gone into last week’s delights, but on the night she arrived we went to dinner at a tavern nearby. Given the gorgeous weather, the only reason we were able to get a patio spot at relatively short notice was the holiday weekend. So thank you to everyone in the neighborhood who went out of town. Anyway, we had a nice leisurely dinner and drinks.

This week’s bouquet was pinks, reds and whites, with a splash of purple. I added the white bellflower and a couple of other things that were still doing OK from last week’s bouquets. Then on Saturday I bought another bunch of peonies at the market and reworked the bouquet a bit to include them.

I went to yoga for the first time in a while, which felt pretty good. And it was nice to be back in the studio in person.

This year’s early season gardening was severely hampered by messing up my back, but I finally finished sowing all my various zinnia seeds. I am excited for future zinnia bouquets!

There are tomatoes coming in on both of my tomato plants, and tiny peppers on one of my tiny pepper plants. A tiny pepper on a tiny pepper plant is just delightful.

Made the traditional strawberry shortcake with farmer’s market strawberries. There’s a recipe from America’s Test Kitchen that I like, though this year the berries themselves did turn out a little sugary.

A bouquet of light yellow snapdragon, deep yellow yarrow, frothy pink adn red blooms, stems of lavendar and white bellflower, and some yellow and white feverfew, plus a pink peony bud.

  • This week’s bouquet is a lovely combination of whites, peaches, and yellow, with some pink foxglove for contrast. It included several ranunculus, which are my favorite.
  • Used my new Staub x Smitten Kitchen braiser to make Chicken Rice with Buttered Onions. It was a delight to cook with and I had no issues scrubbing the rice out of the bottom of it, which confirms my suspicion that the finish on my dutch oven is pretty damaged. Which is not a delight but that’s why I bought a delightful new piece of cookware! The lid has a feature called aroma rain, how can you be anything other than delighted by that?
  • I finished three books on Wednesday after work! Which is good because six holds came in this week.
  • I learned from a friend that I could get a digital card for the library system in a nearby county online. I thought you had to visit a branch in person. So I signed up and spent an afternoon optimizing my ebook holds across the two systems.
  • Strawberry season has arrived at the farmer’s market!
  • Several times this week I saw baby praying mantises hanging out in the backyard! They were spending a lot of time hanging out on the house, act, which seemed weird. And somehow one got inside the basement and trapped in a spiderweb right by the door, but I was able to rescue and relocate it. I also relocated one that hitched a ride indoors on a houseplant that I’m acclimating to be outside for the summer. That one seemed particularly willing to hop on a bit of rhubarb leaf from the compost and get back outside. I dropped it off on my chive so it can feast on the aphids.

  • The week’s bouquet from my floral CSA will always be one of my delights!
  • The peonies I got at the farmer’s market were just starting to open when I bought them. They’re so lovely and fluffy, and the peachy pink of one is particularly pretty.
  • The last of my seedlings arrived! I ordered some plants bred for containers: a jalapeno, a snacking pepper, and a cherry tomato. As is usually the case they looked a bit rough by the time they arrived but started to perk up with some water.
  • I finished reading The Familiar, the new historical fantasy novel by Leigh Bardugo. It’s set in Spain during the Inquisition, and is about a kitchen servant who can do magic. She’s pulled into a tournament where the winner will essentially go to work for the king. It was really immersive, plus the book itself has gorgeous endpapers and is edged in black.
  • In the summer I get a pedicure every month at Azalea City Nails, a local salon that provides waterless services (they use oils, which are delightful) and treats the nail techs really well. This Friday I went in for my first pedicure of the summer. I chose a shimmery purple polish that shifts to pink in some lights, from a really fun brand called Holo Taco. Now if only the sun would come out for more than one day at a time.
  • Book club today! It’s always so great to see my book club crew, we laugh a lot and it’s such a mood lifter, even if I’m already in a great mood. Today someone brought Deb’s latest recipe for us to snack on, the Perfect Blueberry Muffin Loaf. It was delicious, though personally I prefer the muffin version as you get a better ratio of crunchy topping to soft muffin.
  • My friend and I saw the last show in the season at Centersatge, The Importance of Being Earnest, which was very funny and really well done. It was also a very different production from the last time I saw it there, which was apparently during the 2009/2010 season. I can’t say I remember it particularly well but I left with a different vibe. There are a few shows left later this week and next weekend, so you still have a chance to see it if you’d like. And you should!

  • My hubby picked up some Taharka Brothers ice cream over the weekend, including pistachio. It was the best pistachio ice cream I’ve ever had. Super creamy, strong pistachio flavor, and lots of little pistachio bits.
  • My flower share started this week! It works like a CSA. I paid ahead of time this winter to get four bouquets in May (and June and September) and then each week I pick it up off of a neighbor’s porch. This first bouquet had a cheerful mix of colors and lots of movement in how it was composed.
  • We went to the Nats game on Wednesday. Apparently we bought ourselves seats that were 3 rows back from the third base line, right in line with the pitcher. Very cool!
  • Made rhubarb crumble for dessert! And some green garlic pasta for dinner.
  • Got another gorgeous bouquet of poppies at the farmer’s market.
