Weekly Delights: Week of May 13, 2024

  • The week’s bouquet from my floral CSA will always be one of my delights!
  • The peonies I got at the farmer’s market were just starting to open when I bought them. They’re so lovely and fluffy, and the peachy pink of one is particularly pretty.
  • The last of my seedlings arrived! I ordered some plants bred for containers: a jalapeno, a snacking pepper, and a cherry tomato. As is usually the case they looked a bit rough by the time they arrived but started to perk up with some water.
  • I finished reading The Familiar, the new historical fantasy novel by Leigh Bardugo. It’s set in Spain during the Inquisition, and is about a kitchen servant who can do magic. She’s pulled into a tournament where the winner will essentially go to work for the king. It was really immersive, plus the book itself has gorgeous endpapers and is edged in black.
  • In the summer I get a pedicure every month at Azalea City Nails, a local salon that provides waterless services (they use oils, which are delightful) and treats the nail techs really well. This Friday I went in for my first pedicure of the summer. I chose a shimmery purple polish that shifts to pink in some lights, from a really fun brand called Holo Taco. Now if only the sun would come out for more than one day at a time.
  • Book club today! It’s always so great to see my book club crew, we laugh a lot and it’s such a mood lifter, even if I’m already in a great mood. Today someone brought Deb’s latest recipe for us to snack on, the Perfect Blueberry Muffin Loaf. It was delicious, though personally I prefer the muffin version as you get a better ratio of crunchy topping to soft muffin.
  • My friend and I saw the last show in the season at Centersatge, The Importance of Being Earnest, which was very funny and really well done. It was also a very different production from the last time I saw it there, which was apparently during the 2009/2010 season. I can’t say I remember it particularly well but I left with a different vibe. There are a few shows left later this week and next weekend, so you still have a chance to see it if you’d like. And you should!
